A Collective Embrace: How Black Women Celebrate Their Heritage
Black History Month is more than a celebration of the great achievements of African-Americans throughout U.S. history — it’s a chance for Black women to explore different ways to commemorate their culture, share their stories and pass on traditions. This month, get inspired by these tips, and honor your heritage with your loved ones, friends and community.

Volunteer As a Big Sister
Get active in your community by volunteering as a big sister at a local nonprofit organization or with an outreach program for girls. Many of these organizations depend on the generosity of strong women in the community who can serve as mentors, promote self-esteem and share their time with underprivileged girls who aspire to reach their fullest potential. By helping young girls bring out their best selves, you can inspire future generations.
Host a Soulful Dinner
Savor the flavor of your culture by re-creating the family dishes that helped make a trip home more special. Whether you're cooking catfish, pot roast, chicken or sweet-potato pie, honor your family with traditional recipes passed on to you by your relatives.
Start a Sister Movie Night
Host a movie night featuring films that promote positive change and help inspire you and your friends. Showcase movies with powerful messages, such as "The Rosa Parks Story," which details events leading up to the historic boycott for racial integration, or "Introducing Dorothy Dandridge," which follows the story of the multitalented Black actress and singer through her early career and her historic Best Actress Oscar® nomination. After each film, encourage discussion.
Honor History’s Greats
Pay homage to your history by learning about your heritage and celebrating contributions of notable African-Americans. Interview some of your relatives to trace your family tree and to uncover which of your ancestors you are most like. Quiz family members and friends on Martin Luther King Jr.'s speeches, recite one of Maya Angelou's poems, listen to the music of Ella Fitzgerald and read about the journey of President Barack Obama. By celebrating those who have shaped our history, you might inspire others to follow in their footsteps.
