How We Define Health
Atlanta 2009

Monica Melton (Moderator): When I think about health, for black women, our families create well-being for us. Because we're going to worry about our children, our husbands, our significant others, sometimes before we even worry about ourselves. Making sure that we have a place to take our children every day when we go to work. Because if we go to work, and we don't have a reliable daycare, or we don't have some place where we can take our children where they'll be safe, it creates a lot of anxiety and stress.

SUPER: Health is not just the absence or presence of illness ...

SUPER: ... health is the well being of the whole family.

Moderator: So then, health is not just the absence or presence of illness, health is the well-being of the whole family. What can we do right here and right now to create wellness for ourselves?

Participant: I used to be over 300 pounds. And through my journey and losing weight, and going ... Now I'm incorporating physical activities into my life now, where I do boot camp almost every day.

SUPER: Well Being Tips: exercise

Moderator: So, we can exercise a little bit more. That will create well-being for us.

Participant: I believe changing your diet increases your stamina and also to increase your skin, your beauty from within to come out into your outer beauty.

SUPER: Well Being Tips: diet and nutrition

Moderator: She said that she thinks that nutrition helps to create inner beauty. We still want to create a sense of wellness with ourselves and with the community, that word community. So then for us, that word health is also about community.
