Young Women Feeling Secure
Atlanta 2009

Ronda Racha Penrice (Moderator): I wanted to kind of engage us in an interactive conversation.

SUPER: How do you make your young lady feel secure?

Moderator: How do you make your young lady feel secure?

Participant: I just reinforced her attributes to 16. And I grew up, you know, at a time when my complexion was not that popular, so my mother always reinforced that. Always told me the blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice; those types of things. And, you know, that I was beautiful, too. So, I just reinforce that to her.

Moderator: Do you talk to your sons about their choices in women and what they find attractive?

Participant: Well, I make sure I tell my sons, "Do not say anything derogatory to women, especially black women." You know, other than that, I make sure they think very positively about women.

Participant: I have two boys.

Moderator: What were your strategies to keep them focused on what's most important?

Participant: Always respect a young lady no matter what. Because nobody is going to respect you if you don't respect yourself.
