SUPER: My Black is Beautiful
Charlotte 2009
SUPER: I did not know I was black until...
Levannah Forrest (Moderator): I did not know I was black until he dared me. I did not know my black was beautiful until she told me.
Participant: When I actually went to a historically black college and just saw so many ethnicities from Africa, from New York, from New Jersey.
Participant: It's always a daily rediscovery, 'cause so many times society gives you so many negative images. I think it's always constantly, like they say, encourage yourself.
Participant: After I got grown, that's when I started to accept who I was.
Young Participant: People kept making fun of me, and then I just told them, "I know I'm black and I know I'm pretty so ..."
Moderator: Did you hear what she said? She said, "I'm black and I know I'm pretty."
SUPER: When I became a mother...
Participant: When I became a mother of two boys, I knew that I had to get myself together, because I am a reflection of them.
SUPER: When I was a single parent...
Participant: When I was a single parent, but I raised five children and went back to school and got my degree and worked. I started my own business and went to school. So, that's when I discovered that I am a strong black woman.
Participant: I enjoyed hearing different women, and hearing their different experiences of when they discovered they were black. It was very enlightening.
