It's All About Family
Chicago 2009
Participant: My father used to always tell me as a little girl, he would say, "You know, you're a little girl now. And all little girls will grow up to be women. But it's more important to carry yourself like a lady." I'm 53 years old. I have eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. And my granddaughters received that same message, as well as my daughters.
Joslyn Slaughter (Moderator): Your children should be cute and smart for what's up here, not what's out here. You should tell them they are beautiful regardless.
Participant: I have a 6-year-old daughter and when she was really young, I told her, "Being beautiful doesn't matter what you're wearing or how you look. It's about how you treat people." So, I always told her, "You're beautiful if you love God, you listen to your parents and you're nice to people." So, she'll rock that on me now. Sometimes, I'll be about to walk out the door and I don't have on any earrings. And she'll say, "Mom it doesn't matter what you've got on. It's how you treat people. You're still beautiful."
Participant: You're all beautiful. Caramel, chocolate, whatever. You're all beautiful. Don't change yourself for nobody.
Participant: It is so important to learn to love yourself. And as I said, it starts on the inside with self-love.
Participant: When people say, whether it's husband and wife or your children or grandchildren, you should carry around, this is my brag book; this is my beautiful black family. Wherever I go, when people ask me, "What about your family?" This is my beautiful black family. And I tell them all the time, you should carry a picture. You should be proud of that. We are a beautiful people.
